First is Shelter in Nairobi:
In 2002 Francis Ooko begin to provide food
for 10
then 20 homeless
children in a Nairobi slum. Then with wooden polls and corrugated metal
sheets he built a "temporary" building on the only available land
under power lines to provide a shelter for the children and begin
school classes. Later in 2002 he contacted Sandy Pofahl and the two of
them and a great number of helping friends and churches enabled the
orphanage to add two more additional buildings and grow from 20 to 100
to the now 282 children. We are now moving from the original shelter in
Nairobi to our new Home in Kisumu. |

Third is Main Building
in
Kisumu:
We completed our second building of 4,000
square
feet in April of 2008 which enables us to move our kids from Nairobi to
Kisumu. This building is divided into four sections for use as a dormitory, class rooms, bathroom
and kitchen
facilities and marks a TREMENDOUS advance over our prior Nairobi
buildings with our new indoor plumbing with toilets and showers
as well as our own fresh well water, windows and concrete rather than
dirt floors. Negotiations are under way with Kenya Power and Light to
extend the electricity to us 1500 feet for less than $20,000. |

Third is Jobs for the Future: Not only are we keeping the children dry
when
it rains and providing food when they are hungry, but we are educating
them so that they may play an important role in their community and
country in the future. We have begun vocational training with Academy
Manufacturing to provide furniture for the new Home in Kisumu and have
received orders from a government office for our furniture. We will
teach the children vocational skills that will prepare them for jobs
when they leave the orphanage and enable them to begin their own
businesses. |

Our present budget is $55,250.00 per year to feed, clothe, house, and educate our children as well as provide a minimal amount of income for our staff. The majority of the our funds for day-to-day food and clothing in 2007 came from the generosity of a church in England while the funds to acquire the new land in Kisumu and the construction of the buildings has come through the Readers of www.52Best.com in the United States. | |||||||||||
